Play-Off Dream Over

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/05/2014

TWO freak events gave Grimsby a mountain to climb at Gateshead which ultimately they failed to do, but not for want of trying. Firstly James McKeown let in a freak goal which he would have caught 99 times out of 100. Then Scott Neilson was sent off for a challenge which the referee was the only person in the ground to see.

Despite this, Grimsby came back into the game when Craig Disley finished off a Thomas cross and 10-man Grimsby looked the more likely to go on and win the game. However the mountain became a cliff face when a second Town player was sent off when Sam Hatton made a rash challenge which resulted in his second yellow card on 78 minutes,

Town hung on more a few minutes and extra time looked a distinct possibility. However an individual goal by Marwood sealed the points for Gateshead with 84 minutes on the clock.

In the remaining 10 minutes of playing time Gateshead passed the ball around between themselves with ease having two extra players and Grimsby became increasingly desperate just to get the ball. Consequently McKeown rushed out of his goal deep in injury time to try and intercept the ball but Turnbull fed O'Donnell for an easy finish,

Town did not get the breaks in the two games with Gateshead, who consequently go on to meet favourites Cambridge in the final.
