Town Fall to Late Goal

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 14/08/2016

A LATE goal cost Grimsby a deserved point at Wycombe yesterday. The Mariners has successfully negotiated their way back into the game after conceding a second half free kick, thanks to a strike by Andrew Boyce. Town had looked the most likely to score a winner before Stewart's sucker punch.

Paul Hurst brought the suspended Josh Gowling into the side at the expense of Shaun Pearson, and Vernon and Jackson were the preferred front duo, with Bogle dropping to the bench.

The first half was a lacklustre affair with the two teams cancelling one another out in a game of poor quality. Kayden Jackson had a chance for the Mariners after a defensive mistake allowed the Town striker to break free, but the loanee miscontrolled the ball and the chance came to nothing.

After the break the game picked up with the Mariners attacking the Town supporters at Adams Park. It was the home side who took the lead from a free kick after Summerfield was adjudged to have fouled a player on the edge of the box. Sido Jombati blasted in the resulting free kick leaving McKeown rooted to his spot.

Bogle came on for Town and the Mariners came back into the game following a sustained spell of pressure in which Bogle and Jackson were both denied by close range clearances. However from a corner the balled bounced out to Boyce, who controlled the ball and drilled it low into the net to prompt wild celebrations behind the goal.

With just ten minutes remaining Town looked good for at least a point, but slack defending following a long throw saw substitute Adebayi's header hit both posts, and Stewart tapped the ball in on the line to give the Chairboys their first points of the season.
