In Trouble at Mill

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/11/2018

GRIMSBY surrendered a 1-0 half-time lead at Mansfield and ended up falling to their third consecutive defeat. The Mariners had been gifted an own goal in the first half, but goals at the start and end of the second half sealed the points for the home side.

Michael Jolley shuffled his pack for the trip to Field Mill, bringing in Akin Famewo, Jake Hessenthaler, Martyn Woolford and Jordan Cook the starting line up.

Mansfield had a golden chance to take an early lead when Danny Rose intercepted an attempted backpass and found himself clean through on goal but McKeown saved with his legs. Walker then had a good chance when a cross was played to him on the edge of the box but his first touch was heavy and McKeown was able to close him down.

Town took a surprise lead from a throw-in which Wes Thomas received and turned and ran into a wide position. His cross-shot eluded the 'keeper and went straight into the path of Benning who was unable to stop the ball going in the net.

Mansfield didn't take long after the break and equalised when a high ball looped into the box and Walker powered it in.

Mansfield looked the more likely to score the winner and they duly obliged when Walker once more powered in a header from a cross.

The result leaves Grimsby once again looking over their shoulders. They now have two tricky-looking cup games to try and find some form and some much-needed prize money to strengthen the coffers for the January transfer window.
