Crewe Cut

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/09/2019

GRIMSBY succumbed to their second league defeat of the season when they lost 2-0 at home to Crewe. The Mariners missed a first-half penalty which they would rue when Crewe took the lead early in the second half. The Railwaymen added a second in injury time when Town were pushing forward.

Michael Jolley kept the same starting line-up as won at Walsall the week before. None of the performances in the 2-1 cup defeat by Scunthorpe had done enough to change his mind, including new loan midfielder Ethan Robson.

The game was finely balanced with few chances until Town were given a golden chance to strike first when Daniel Powell fouled Luke Hendrie in the box. The 'keeper seemed to move off his line and saved Hanson's spot-kick.

After the break, Town gave the ball away and it was played out to Lowery who struck it past McKeown.

Crewe dominated the match for large spells and had the bulk of possession. Grimsby though did threaten on occasion and Jordan Cook's pass just eluded Green. Hanson's cross-shot then hit the crossbar and almost fell to Green.

Increasingly desperate Town threw everyone forward and were caught on the break when Kirk skipped round McKeown before drilling the ball high into the net.
