Frustration at Blundell Park

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/02/2022

GRIMSBY had a frustrating evening at Blundell Park when they failed to beat King's Lynn Town in a goalless draw. McAtee hit the post in the second half, as the visitors defended in depth. However, Town almost conceded twice in breakaway moves and in the end had to settle for a point.

The first half was largely a stalemate when Grimsby had most of the possession but were unable to threaten the goal. Clunan should have given the visitors an early lead but missed from close range. For Town, Clifton had the best chance, but his shot from a narrow angle was brilliantly saved by Jones.

After the break, Town should have had a penalty for handball, and shortly afterwards Taylor set up McAtee with a neat flick, but the Town striker's effort hit the post.

With Town pushing forward they were always vulnerable on the break and Widdrington had a shot tipped over by Crocombe then Hargreaves missed a free header after a Pearson slip in the build-up.

Abraham and Scannell came off the bench as Grimsby threw everything at a stubborn King's Lynn in the closing stages, but it was not to be. The Mariners have another home game on Saturday, against Aldershot, to try and claw back some of the lost points.

Sides are going to come to Blundell Park to defend and games like this are only going to encourage them in future to do so. The Mariners have to find a way of breaking down the opposition.
