Up, Up and Away

GRIMSBY continued their impressive away form with a battling 3-1 win over Stockport at Edgeley Park. Clifton and Holohan both scored before the break, but Madden pulled one back before halftime. Town withstood a lot of pressure after the break before Camps was sent off for a bad tackle on Green.

That gave Town a numerical advantage but they still have to defend in depth, although they always threatened on the break, and they wrapped up the points with a late Hunt strike.

Green was the only change to the starting XI from the win over Crawley with Maguire-Drew dropping to the bench. Ryan Taylor was the only striker, with Kiernan, Holohan, Clifton and Khan in midfield, and Green sat in front of the back 4. It was a formation aimed at the counterattack.

Town soaked up a lot of possession in the early stages, with Crocombe being called on to produce a save from Sarcevic. A Grimsby break midway through the first half produced the first goal when Town won the ball in midfield and Clifton burst into the box, passing to Khan, whose shot was saved but the ball bounced out to Clifton for a tap-in.

Five minutes later Town broke again when Kiernan and Khan then launched an attack. The latter's cross was not cleared properly by Jaros, and Holohan pounced to blast the ball high into the net and put Grimsby in dreamland with a 2-0 lead.

2-0 is a dangerous score with the tendency to relax, but a goal just before the break, reminded Town the game was far from won. This time it was Crocombe who failed to deal with a cross, and Madden to have a simple goal to give the hosts hope.

Hunt replace Holohan at half time in what looked like a change forced by injury.

After the break, Crocombe made up for his mistake with a great save to deny Hippolyte. Town were frustrating their opponents with time-wasting at every opportunity, and their frustration showed when Camps was shown red for a studs-high lunge on Green. The extra man though didn't stop the Stockport pressure and Grimsby defended valiantly to maintain their lead.

The points were only secured in the final stages when Glennon broke and found substitute Hunt, one of several players breaking into the box, who found his spot and sent the away end into dreamland.

Grimsby's amazing away record continues and the team is getting better as the players get to know one another. Hurst now appears to have found his best side (with tweaks here and there depending on the opposition) and is making good use of his extra substitutes, with the players coming on and once again making a big impact. Grimsby next face Bradford at Blundell Park and they will be hoping for a second home win of the season to follow the victory over Crawley last week. Bradford, currently 5th, should prove tougher opponents than the Sussex side though.
