After the Lord Mayor's Show

GRIMSBY'S successful cup wins were put into context today by a third successive league defeat, as the Mariners lost 3-1 to Doncaster at Blundell Park. The only bright point of the day was the 1 came from John McAtee, who came off the bench and gave Town a flicker of hope to pull one back from a 3-0 deficit.

Town started poorly, and gave the ball away regularly in the opening stages. It was no surprise when Doncaster went ahead when Town failed to clear properly from an earlier attack and Knoyle played the ball back in for a simple finish for Miller.

Grimsby could have bounced back, as they did against Plymouth's early start when Khan and Clifton combined to present Clifton with a one-on-one with the 'keeper but the ball was charged down at the edge of the box.

The Mariners were enjoying most of the possession but Doncaster looked more likely to score the game's second goal and looked especially dangerous on the right hand side.

Doncaster started the second half with an early goal, as they did in the first, when Biggins volleyed the ball in following a Doncaster free kick.

McAtee came on to give Grimsby hope, but soon afterwards Doncaster were 3-0 up when Knoyle and Miller combined, with the latter finishing superbly to put the game to bed.

McAtee gave Town brief hope with a bursting run into the box, and a characteristic strike to make the score 3-1. Town nearly got a second late on when Richardson's initial effort was saved, and then McAtee’s rebound was deflected onto the bar off his gloves.

Town got and deserved nothing, they had a lot of possession and no end product. They rely on set pieces for goals, which if they don't come is a problem as open-play goals are hard to come by. Worryingly Grimsby have just 1 point from 12 and need to get the points column ticking over again to stop dropping down the league table.
