Back to Earth for the Mariners

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/03/2023

GRIMSBY continued their tour of far-flung corners of England with a trip to Carlisle today which ended with a 2-0 defeat. The much-changed Mariners side conceded two goals in the first half against the promotion-chasing Cumbrians, despite a strong opening spell to the half.

Paul Hurst rested many players and dropped several regulars from the squad altogether including Glennon, Waterfall and McAtee. Others such as Clifton and Emmanuel only made the bench. Just four players started who had begun the victory at Southampton.

A Lloyd flick created a chance for Khan in the opening 10 minutes, but his shot went just wide. Towards the end of the half, a mistake by Hunt presented a chance to McCalmont who scored the game's opener and Carlisle soon added a second when Gibson beat Amos and blasted the ball into the net to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

The initiative swung to Grimsby in the second half but Town failed to muster anything of note in a dull affair.

Grimsby have a busy schedule and they still need more points to avoid the drop. Fortunately, they have two home games this week, both against teams below them in the league: Newport and Rochdale. After that they have three road trips south of London with the Brighton FA Cup Quarter-final sandwiched between league games with Sutton and Crawley.
