Hurst and Doig Sacked

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/10/2023 (Last updated: 30/10/2023)

GRIMSBY manager Paul Hurst has been sacked after a run of five consecutive defeats has sent to Mariners to within 4 points of the relegation zone. Assistant Manager Chris "Deputy" Doig has also been dismissed.

In an official statement Jason Stockwood, GTFC’s Chair, stated, "It is with sadness and disappointment that we’ve reached this point. Since May 2021, we’ve had a positive relationship with Paul and Chris. We’re proud of our achievements under their leadership: our promotion from the National League, the historic FA Cup run, and attaining our highest league position in 17 years. However, it’s time to embark on the next phase of the club’s development.

"We’re grateful for their hard work and wish them future success. They are an indelible part of our history and will always be welcome at Blundell Park."

Hurst has had two spells at Blundell Park and twice won promotion for the Mariners. In an extraordinary 12 months, Grimsby came from behind in three matches to win the National League play-offs in 2022 and then went on to reach the FA Cup Quarter Finals. However the summer transfer business failed to give the Mariners the cutting edge they needed to win games, and the team's results have started to slide.

Coaches Ben Davies and Shaun Pearson, both former defenders, will take control of the team on an interim basis until a replacement is found. The next game is a First Round FA Cup tie at Slough
