Town Fail to Beat Shrews

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/12/2025

GRIMSBY again let a lead slip and had to settle for a point at Shrewsbury in difficult conditions. Charles Vernam put Town 1-0 up from the spot after Walker was hacked down, but conceded in first-half stoppage time from a Marquis header.

The Mariners had the better chances in the second half, but could not manage a second, and they have not won a league game since mid-October

Unchanged Town found it hard to create much in windy conditions, although Kabia got the ball in the net was ruled offside, but faced little threat from the home side, who had the wind advantage in the first half. Town could have had a penalty for a foul on Kabia, but they eventually persuaded the referee to point to the spot when Walker was upended just inside the box by McDermott. It was a needless penalty to concede, but Vernam took advantage from the spot.

Grimsby suffered a sucker punch just before the break when a Clucas long throw from was returned to him, and he crossed for Marquis to head in at the far post.

Town had the better chances in the second half but failed to add to their tally, to end another disappointing league game - at a ground they have never won at. Grimsby's next two league games are against top 4 opposition in the form of Notts County and Bromley, so points look hard to come by as the play-off hopes continue to fade.
