The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

18/12 Hudds 1st Half

Huddersfield Town 3 Grimsby Town 1
18 Dec 1999, Nationwide League Division 1

A very cold day but dry and still, good conditions for football. The McAlpine looked empty at 2.45pm but by 3pm was amazingly mostly full.

The boardroom changes don't seem to have affected the players who put in a good performance at league leaders Huddersfield. Town had no luck at all today and dominated the game for long periods of both halves. Huddersfield's opener on six minutes had a stroke of fortune, as Gallimore misjudged the bounce of the balls but recovered to block a shot which then took a wicked deflection off his shin. Croudsen going the wrong way did well to divert the ball onto the post, but Wijnhardt tapped in from 3 feet. Town then dominated possession for the next 20 minutes without really creating an opening with the usual slow predictable build up. Huddersfield on the other hand were faster on the break but Croudsen hardly had a real save to make all match.

Huddersfield then broke away and a lovely cross from Thornley found Wijnhardt unmarked 12 yards out and he tucked a first time volley inside Croudsen's near post. Smith looked accusingly at Lever who should have been marking the Huddersfield forward. To Town's credit they came back at Huddersfield and as half time approached, Donovan free on the right superbly picked out Groves in the box who struck a low volley into the corner. Town then pressed for the remainder of the half and the home crowd were distinctly restless. Huddersfield, two chances two goals and for the home side at the top of the table they had been pretty much outplayed, but possession doesn't win matches.
