The New Board

David Peasgood this weekend finds Bert and Fred have just read the telegraph news about the new town board. Hear their views and YOU decide in our special 'fishy' poll.

Fred and Bert

Do you think the new board heralds a bright new dawn for GTFC?

BERT:
Bloody hell. At last we've found some big guns to run the club instead of them old 'ten bob and a bag of spanners' merchants'.

FRED:
Maybe we have. Or maybe it's just more of the same. Have they said they'll be dipping in their pockets to buy any players?

BERT:
No, But it's not about that is it. Charity is no good long term. It's about being professional and making the club marketable. Getting other businessmen interested, selling it to the public, raising gates, raising income and being self sufficient and solvent.

FRED:
Eh! Did you write that or 'ave you just read it out? All I'm saying is that a football club isn't like a supermarket or car showroom. For all we know they want the club as a hobby.

BERT:
No. I disagree. So far the new board have done the right things and said the right things. They've put themselves up to be shot down and survived. I believe they trust these new board members to do a good job for them.

FRED:
One of them is from Leeds and another from York. They are hardly home town boys.

BERT:
Does that matter? They don't want to use GTFC as a 'Costcutters' outlet or a car showroom, and they are putting their cash where their mouths are in travelling down here each week and underwriting the clubs overdraft. They look good to me and I'm going to sit and watch them with high hopes. You're just being a typical Grimsby bloke who refuses to believe that we just might finally be on the way up.

FRED:
Well I hope you're right, but since the war I've seen too many chairman say we can't afford to go up too high, and they aren't all daft. I'm biding my time and waiting for the traditional Easter slump to take us away from the traditional 'play off fringe' danger zone.

BERT:
I don't know why I sit with you sometimes. I bet them lot out there are more optimistic.

FRED:
Well ask them!.

Now for the vote...
