Vottola Decision Due

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 21/12/2000

Lennie Lawrence will decide later today whether or not Franco Vottola has done enough to earn a contract with the Mariners. The young Argentinian striker has been at the club for almost a month, and has impressed many with his reserve performances so far.

The former Argentina Under-18 international may be offered a one-year contract with Grimsby, although Lawrence did admit that he must improve technically if he is to make the grade in English football.

The Mariners boss looked on at Hartlepool yesterday, as he saw his second-string undone by a 78th minute strike from former Coventry City midfielder Sam Shilton (pictured below).

"They had enough chances, they should have won," commented Lawrence. "Not quite good enough in either box would be my verdict."

Defender Paul Raven made a successful comeback after a six-week absence, completing the full ninety minutes.

The Mariners get their chance to turn the tables on the 'Pool in the return leg of this league cup tie on 17th January.
