Burnett Set A Deadline!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 13/07/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE, Grimsby Town's manager has set a deadline for "Golden Goal" Wayne Burnett to decide his future with the club. Presently operating on a month by month contract, the midfielder has until the weekend to make a decision.

Although Burnett is unlikely to be satisfied with the club's latest offer, Lawrence said, "He's had an offer from us that reflects the fact that he's only had 42 starts in three years because of injuries, although he's fit now.

"It's not what he was hoping for but that's what it is. He'll need to make a decision in the immediate future, and that means the end of this week."

Although Burnett is a fans favourite, he has been an expensive player with only playing a few games in three years and Grimsby only recently offloaded Richard Smith who though an excellent player was costing the club a great deal of money owing to his injury problems.

"...No one wants him to leave Blundell Park!..."

Burnett should consider his position and accept the clubs terms. He has not had any approaches by other teams and Lawrence appears to be quite justified in pointing out the financial situation it placed the club in with his long term injuries.

Now that he is fit he has the opportunity to repay the commitment the club made to him during his time off with injuries. The Mariners need commitment from players and recently Burnett has not shown a great deal of that. The time has come for him to commit himself one way or the other. No one wants him to leave Blundell Park but he cannot "play games" with the club and draw wages until he gets a better offer.

Now is the time for Burnett to get real and return the investment the Mariners have made in him!
