Wolves Report Card

DR FISHY has compiled match statistics and a report card for the Grimsby Town side that drew 1-1 at home to Wolves.

Coyne: Made a great save before Wolves put the ball in the back of the net only for it to be ruled off side. Otherwise he wasn't called into action and had no chance with the unfortunate own goal. His kicking and throwing were as good as they normally are.

Grade: B-

Butterfield: Made four great interceptions in the first half alone and read the game very well. Considering he was marking a player who will be surely featuring in the World Cup later this year, he did a great job. Leave him at right back Lennie.

Grade: B

Gallimore: A confident display at left back although again he was exposed when Wolves broke away as Boulding committed too far forward. Still, despite the absence of Quick Mick, Gally performed well overall.

Grade: C+

Broomes: What the Evening Telegraph would dub as 'a classy display' which basically meant he made a few great passes and showed the vision and ability to perform well for the club in the future. The manager better move quick to secure his services, it looks like we'll need them badly.

Grade: B-

Groves: Very unfortunate with the own goal and certainly no blame should be attached to the captain for the equaliser. Other than that he put himself about a bit and caused a nuisance in the opposition's box from set pieces.

Grade: C+

Pouton: The 'all action display' made a return from a brief absence, despite playing wide right - this was a game where he was needed in the centre. He made some flying challenges but I suppose it was inevitable that he'd injure himself sooner rather than later. Impressive game though.

Grade: B

Boulding: A liability in defence but something good happens whenever the ball is at his feet. He's a bit greedy but if his shooting improves outside the box then we could be treat to some spectacular goals in the future. Teams simply don't know how to mark someone with Boulding's ability out of the game.

Grade: B-

Willems: The Dutchman's slow progress continues, and the game against Wolves showed his potential ability. Strong in the tackle, hardly any of Wolves' moves went through the centre - he was like a brick wall stopping everything that came his way.

Grade: B

Coldicott: He still doesn't seem as dominant in the centre as we've become used to, but he and Willems are two of a kind but work extremely efficiently together. Going forward Stace doesn't look too clever, but he's presence is needed in midfield.

Grade: C+

Jevons: Some have begun to call him a 'lazy sod' but from where I was sat, Jevons gave it everything against Wolves. Great goal, his movement off the ball is improving but he desperately wants the ball at his feet. Unlucky not to get passed to more.

Grade: C+

Jeffrey: Tried hard but never looked like scoring. His clever flick to the far post in the second half was as close as he came, other than that I can't remember him having a shot. The Wolves' defenders seemed to work him out after not too long.

Grade: C

SUBS

Neilson: Only came on in the last minute to replace the injured Pouton, otherwise I don't think Lennie intended on using any of his subs. Can't remember Neilson doing anything of note, but I do remember him playing in midfield rather than defence.

Best part of Town's performance: I suppose the defence coped very well and have made a massive improvement over the last few weeks. Take away the two late goals that Millwall and Man City scored against us and we suddenly have a defence that only ever looks like conceding a goal a game. The last time our defence was well and truly undone was Man City away when we lost 4-0. Since, there has been a big improvement.

Areas for improvement: Despite a striker scoring for us, we need both strikers looking like scoring, Jeffrey never looked likely to find the back of the net. Neither did Jevons after he had scored. Boulding, playing as a midfielder looked the likeliest. Still, we saw a goal (our only goal in four games) so there's the problem.

Entertainment scale: Started brilliantly, then it quickly went downhill. First half wasn't all that bad, the second half never really got going until the last five minutes when both teams suddenly realised they could win it. The referee, who in my opinion was good overall, didn't help matters by stop-starting the game, giving free kicks for fairly innocuous challenges.
