Chief Scout Axed

GRIMSBY TOWN'S chief scout Steve Thompson has left the club after the sacking of Lennie Lawrence. Former Sheff Utd, Southend and Lincoln boss Thompson was brought in by Lawrence to head the club's scouting network in but has been axed as part of chairman Peter Furneaux's cost-cutting exercise.

New Towm player-manager Paul Groves will not be bringing in a full-time replacement, instead relying on his contacts within the game. "Steve Thompson left the club at about the same time as Lennie did," Groves confirmed yesterday.

"He will not be replaced as such but we have a number of people who we know and trust and will be using for games up and down the country."

Thompson is expected to join up with Lennie Lawrence at his new club Cardiff City, which the former Grimsby boss joined as Director of Football within a week of being axed by the Mariners.
