The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Crewe 2 Grimsby 0

TWO first half blunders in which the Mariners gifted Crewe two goals to effectively end a relegation "six pointer" in the Railwaymen's favour saw Grimsby go down 2-0 at Gresty Road. But for Crewe's wayward shooting, in particular that of Dean Ashton, the winning margin could have been much greater.

A poor ball intercepted by Crewe after Town's midfield practically gave it away led to Geoff Thomas tapping home the opener from a tap-in on 9 minutes.

To add to Grimsby's woes a moment of madness by Town player-manager Paul Groves, when he blatantly handled the ball under pressure in the penalty area, led to a penalty and the Grimsby boss was fortunate to escape with a yellow card. Shaun Smith had no trouble converting the spot kick.

After the break Crewe missed a hatful of chances, and both sides hit the woodwork within a minute, with Phil Jevons almost scoring from one of his overhead kick "specials".

Town were comprehensively beaten in Paul Groves first league defeat since he took over the Blundell Park hotseat, and now need a remarkable run to avoid being relegated to Division Two come April.
