Is football a business or a sport?

Crewe Report Card

DR FISHY has compiled match statistics and a report card for the Grimsby Town side that lost 2-0 to Crewe in Saturday's Nationwide Division One game.

Coyne. Didn't have much to do by recent standards, except shout at his inept defence and make one or two saves. One of maybe 3 players to earn his money on the day...

Grade: B

Groves. Hardly leads by example does he? the own goal versus wolves was unfortunate, but his handball at Crewe was absolutely ridiculous. WHAT WAS HE THINKING!?!?! Didn't push up from the back at all, which we need him to do. He only comes forward for free-kicks...

Grade: D-

Ford. Didn't look out of his depth. Comfortable on the ball, but a victim of Town playing 2 up front and everyone else at the back - so he never had anyone to pass to...

Grade: B-

Gallimore. Average, below his recent standards, but obviously is not Captain material....

Grade: C-

Chapman. Not a left-wing back. Not a left midfielder. But had to play both for a spell... Unlucky to be subbed when you look at who stayed on the pitch...

Grade: C

Butterfield. Hit one superb 30yd cross-field pass with the outside of his right boot, and was witnessed clapping his hands trying to rally the troops. BUT played ridiculously deep all game, and seems to have zero confidence.

Grade: C-

Burnett. I doubt that Dr Fishy has ever seen such an inept performance from an experienced, so called playmaker in midfield. When he was replaced by Coldicott, the Town fans were ecstatic. Sorry, Wayne, but in midfield you have to TACKLE, pass to team-mates and support the attack. You did none of these.

Grade: F

Willems. Well he looked better when Stacy came on, but before then was a bit clueless. Got forward once or twice, but wasn't good enough [like most the side...]

Grade: D+

Campbell. One of those games where you struggle to remember why he was signed. Anonymous for ages, can't remember him beating anyone, and made no runs.

Grade: D

Taylor. New boy soon lost patience with Town's predictable and pointless 'strategy' of midfielders not supporting the attack. Seemed happy to see Boulding come on, giving him an outlet, but then missed our best chance when failed to connect with a 2nd half cross.

Grade: C

Jevons. Nearly scored - hitting the bar with one of countless overhead kicks, but like Butterfield has a few problems. Two examples: 1 - Lack of confidence. 2. Positional play - eg didn't drift wide, didn't work with Taylor or Boulding. Falls over very easily too.

Grade: C

Subs

Boulding. (on at h-time for Chapman) A wide player!!!! Used his pace, ran into dead ends, but terrified the Crewe defence, and created a few half chances.

Grade: B

Coldicott. - should have been on for longer, as it was like we finally had 11 men! He ran FORWARD, passed to TOWN players, and made TACKLES. Compare and contrast with Burnett.

Grade: B

Raven. - only on for a few minutes for Groves. Would have been nice to have another attacking player on the bench instead, such as Jeffrey, Allen or Thompson.

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
