The Media And Grimsby Town

SOMETIMES we praise and sometimes we criticise the media. But it plays an important part in our lives. Particularly if you are a football supporter.

None more so if you are a Mariners supporter but in that respect we are lucky.
Grimsby Town may not be among the richest of clubs in the football league. Nor is Grimsby itself counted among the larger industrial areas with the accompanying wealth, but we do have a few things that many other clubs and cities do not have.
We do have a team in the first division of the football league and if you look at some of the richer areas of the UK that are presently fielding teams in the second and third divisions, one can see how privileged we are.
What many other clubs would also envy us for is the relationship that Grimsby Town Football Club have with the local media, particularly with the Grimsby Telegraph and Radio Humberside.
The fans forum which was broadcast on Radio Humberside and over the internet via the official site is a very good example of the relationship the club have with the media. There would be very few clubs that could gain so much precious air time for their cause.
The same too can be said of the Grimsby Telegraph's current "Up The Mariners" campaign, which has been most effective in increasing the clubs exposure and the attendance figures since the campaign began.
It has also enabled the club, in conjunction with the Grimsby Telegraph, to make special offers to the supporters which have been greatly appreciated. (The club intend to make a special offer to season ticket holders for the Wimbledon game.)
This is all part and parcel of running a successful football club and it is usually the club that provides exposure of the town itself. The relationship with the media, which in Grimsby Town's case is supportive, should not be overlooked in the grand plan.
It would be very wrong of us not to recognise and acknowledge the support of the media, which sometimes we take for granted, but the Fans Forum on Tuesday night illustrated how valuable that support is.
It allowed the club to exercise its policy of open government and transparency. The chairman, manager, assistant manager and captain together with full time executives of the club placed themselves before their customers to answer any questions or criticisms. You cannot ask for more than that and supporters of some other clubs would give their right arm to get that opportunity.
We may not be one of the largest clubs, nor among the richest, but we at least lead the field in some areas and amongst those would be the support of the local media, which in real terms, represents an enormous amount of unpaid advertising which, for a club the size of Grimsby Town, is a most valuable resource.
Hats off to The Grimsby Telegraph and Radio Humberside for their support of our club!.
