The Ray Lucas Column: My Top Night!

LAST NIGHT will live long in my memory, as it gave me the chance to celebrate my birthday early. I wasn't aware I was going to the awards until my dad told me. I got absolutely choked up with emotion when Danny Coyne carried off award after award.

There are two people that deserve a special mention. Firstly, my mate Nicko far taking me to the awards. But a big thank-you must go to Mister Dale Ladson, who took the time (as he is a friend) to track down as many of the players as he could. I've never been in a place with an atmosphere lack that before. And on the night, I felt very pleased indeed to call myself A Mariners fan. For me, last night is right up there with the win at Anfield, for which I was also present. There are some things that you will never forget, and last night is surely one of them.

A big thank-you to Johnny Rowan and Simon Ford who posed for a picture with me. I was also delighted to have the opportunity to have spoken to the management team of Graham Rodger and Paul Groves. But what made my day was the picture with myself, Danny Coyne, "Quick" Mick Boulding and Steve Croudson. And the fact I had one of Boulding's trophies on my knee. Danny was great, as he remembered our last meeting. I will never forget seeing Danny again and I have had the best night of my life.

It surprised me how emotional I got, but I loved every minute of the occasion. I've paid the price this morning, as I can hardly speak. A big thanks to everyone for making it a special night for me. Oh, and Danny, dad said he'll see you at Blundell Park next year!
