Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Peter Furneaux Wants A Solution and Soon

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 02/05/2002

PETER Furneaux said today that at the meeting of Division One club chairmen tomorrow he will be giving the message that money from TV rights is essential for the Mariners.

"The equation is quite simple really. For every pound we get from spectators through the turnstiles we have previously got two from television."

"We need that income and it really is as simple as that. I will be going to the meeting urging the First Division clubs to get something resolved. We will survive as a football club but we can't start to go about the business of new player contracts and signings until we know what money we will have available."

"I know that we are not alone in that but it's meant that we have had to put all of our budget plans on hold and we can't do that for much longer."

More Bad News!

There are strong rumours in the marketplace that NTL are having severe financial problems which may also affect football clubs as they have the websites network.
