Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Allen Heads to Oxford

FORMER Town striker Bradley Allen has ended a week's trial at Brighton without securing a contract, and has now arrived at Oxford on the same mission. The ex-Grimsby playmaker told Radio Humberside: "I've just been a week training and playing games at Brighton, but it hasn't worked out there".

Although Town boss Paul Groves hasn't completely ruled out the prospect of Allen returning to Blundell Park, the striker's wage demands have placed him out of Grimsby's price bracket, and with hundreds of professional footballers in the UK still looking for a new contract, about the best Town can hope for is to snap up some bargain basement players as the summer draws to an end.

  • Town central defender Paul Raven, who was dismissed in the weekend's defeat against Helforge BK, will have to wait and see whether his red card against the Danes will result in a one match domestic ban, a scenario which Grimsby would be desperate to avoid given their pitifully small squad at present.
