The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

August Player of the Month

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 02/09/2002

THIS season on The Fishy, a new feature will be popping up every month on how you can vote for Player Of The Month. Every month you'll have the choice of six players to vote for and these votes will be saved and go towards the Fishy's player of the season.

So remember if you want to put forward players that you've seen either home or away and that you think should be on the list for September e-mail me at tonyhamilton238@hotmail.com and then hopefully your choice will be included.

So here's the six players for the month of August, chosen by fans who have seen Town play in each game.

  • Alan Pouton (Midfield) (P3, 262 minutes, 0 goals)
What a steal from York by Alan Buckley, he's influential running the midfield, and gives 100% every game and is missed by the club when he doesn't play.

  • Steve Chettle (Defender) (P6, 423 minutes, 0 goals)
Signed in the summer from Barnsley on a free, and has got bags of experience with 500+ games for Nott'm Forest (most of them in the Premiership), and has proved a steal at the price.

  • Terry Cooke (Midfield) (P5(1), 511 minutes, 0 goals)
One of the few that played for both Man Utd and Man City. Cooke played with the likes of Savage, Beckham, Giggs, Appleton, Butt and Scholes in the Youth team at Man Utd and has settled into the Town team very well after a loan spell last season.

  • Tony Gallimore (Defender) (P6, 540 minutes, 0 goals)
Bought from Carlisle has captained the side when Macca was injured, and can sometimes play in the middle of the defence. Certain to be a legend at BP.

  • Paul Groves (Defender/Midfield) (P6, 540 minutes, 0 goals)
What is there to say about "the Gaffer"! He saved the club from relegation last season where at one time we were 8 points adrift, had a troublesome summer trying to balance the finances, but in the end we would miss him if he ever decided to retire.

  • John McDermott (Defender) (P6, 540 minutes, 0 goals)
Has played his way into becoming a Town Legend, after well beating Keith Joblin's appearance record for Grimsby, and is still adding to it and has been a loyal servant to this club he has represented for seventeen years.

So here the six players that you can vote for this month (via question of the week)
