Coventry Report Card

YET another defeat, despite a much-improved performance from the players. I think you can expect to see a rise in their grades this week and no detentions.

Coyne: Once again he was steady in goal, good kicking and some great saves. No wonder McAllister had him on his shortlist during the summer. More performances like that and Coyne won't be at Grimsby much longer.
Grade: B+
McDermott: Dean Gordon gave Macca a good running battle down the Town right. The captain got forward when he could but always needed an extra defender to help him out in defence, because of Coventry's formation.
Grade: C
Gallimore: Not sure if Gally should have been playing today. It looked as if he might have been rushed back into first team action. He wasn't all that bad, but there were a few groans around the away section whenever the ball was in his vicinity.
Grade: C-
Groves: Can't cope with pace and struggled most of the game to contain either Mills or Bothroyd. He got a few headers in to clear the danger from set pieces, but ultimately it was an average performance from the gaffer.
Grade: C
Chettle: Again, Groves' central defensive partner looked worried whenever a striker turned to face him. Neither Groves nor Chettle were tight enough on their markers and allowed them just a bit too much room to turn and run.
Grade: C
Campbell: Looked very tired by the end of the game and played very narrow throughout. Appeared to be at his most dangerous when out wide, and put in a great cross for the second goal. Just needs to get involved more.
Grade: C
Barnard: A poor first half showing from the former Barnsley midfielder, but improved vastly in the second half. He almost played as a third striker at times and made good room down the left. Set piece deliveries need to be improved though.
Grade: C
Coldicott: It's been said before and it will be said again; Stace appears to play better against better opposition, and almost always puts in better performances away from home. This one is no exception; he was Town's brick wall.
Grade: B
Pouton: Treat us to one step-over all game, early in the first half. Still refuses to use his left foot. Got stuck in against the Coventry midfield and once or twice looked like he got too involved in certain incidents. Lucky goal.
Grade: B-
Robinson: Tried very hard, the effort was obviously there. Ran everything down, ran himself into the ground without much reward. Showed he was quite strong and physical, and did well holding the ball up.
Grade: C
Kabba: Has an Ashcroft-esque first touch and is all gangly legs inside the area. Superb goal to get things rolling, just sprinted past Shaw and finished calmly. Stood on the ball at least twice and his control is very poor.
Grade: C+
SUBS
Ford: What an excellent player he is maturing into. Even playing at an unfamiliar left back position, he kept his marker in check and blocked any crosses (apart from those from set pieces). Won a lot in the air too.
Grade: C+
Rowan and Mansaram came on very late when Town were already 3-2 down. Mansaram chased a ball out into touch, whereas Rowan probably didn't get a touch.
Overall Verdict: Much, much better from Town. Gally looked slow and off the pace, obviously still suffering effects from the injury. Ford looks excellent, wherever he plays, and good to see the midfield joining in the attacks. That was probably the biggest plus point of the day. Whenever Kabba or Robinson had the ball at their feet with their back to goal, they were pushing it back to Pouton or Coldicott who were then sending it wide. This gave the front two a chance of getting onto the crosses in the middle - and also Pouton was getting in there.
Entertainment Scale: 8
Grade Guide
A* | This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off. |
A | This is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match. |
A- | The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc. |
B+ | The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes. |
B | This can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes. |
B- | The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game. |
C+ | A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score. |
C | An average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance. |
C- | Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match. |
D+ | Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game. |
D | This player shouldn't be playing in the near future. |
D- | The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance |
E | The player should be sacked |
F | And then shot |
