The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Fans' Day Launched!

By: Simon Wilson
Date: 21/11/2002

GRIMSBY Town chairman Peter Furneaux appeared on a Radio Humberside phone-in and asked for a sponsor to come forward for the one remaining unsponsored game - Bradford at home and for anyone with any commercial ideas to come forward.

In addition Mr Furneaux said the club would appreciate any further support from its fans.

In light of the chairman's comments, the Cod Almighty team decided to organise a Fans' Day - a day sponsored by the fans of the club. To raise the cost of the sponsorship we have decided to organise a raffle. A supporter can buy as many tickets as they want at a price of GBP5 per ticket. The prizes on offer aren't any old prizes as well. They are a bit different, a bit special and our thanks go to Grimsby Town Football Club, the Grimsby Telegraph and Radio Humberside for going out of their way to help pledge some terrific prizes. Highlights include:

  • 15 pairs of sponsor's tickets - including three-course meal, a tour of the ground and seats in the executive area to watch the game * the chance to take part in a half time penalty shoot out * be a club mascot for the day! * spend the day in the press box with Radio Humberside's John Tondeur * write a report for the Grimsby Telegraph - and see it published!

  • We're going to have tickets on sale from the Leicester game on Saturday 30 November onwards. It's cutting it a bit tight but I'm confident the people of Grimsby will be able to club together and buy the 500 tickets that will cover the cost of the sponsorship in time for the raffle draw on Monday 23 December 2002. Any additional money will go to the club's youth scheme.

  • It's only GBP5 and this will help safeguard the club's immediate future - with the chance to bag a few prizes into the bargain as well! And - the way I think about it - it's GBP5 to help the club, not a fiver to enter a raffle. Winning a prize is a bonus. By contributing you've won already! The whole idea of the day is for the fans to unite to put a little bit extra in. We've already had a pledge of GBP200 from one person - the things people will do to spend a day with John Tondeur!

  • Fans' Day raffle tickets will be available from the club ticket office on non-matchdays and from Fans' Day ticket sellers around the ground for the home games against Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday. If you think you or somewhere you know could sell tickets please drop us me a line. Every ticket sold contributes and we'd like a few more voices in the local community to help out.
