Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

February Player of the Month Winner

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 16/03/2003

HERE we are getting closer to the end of this season, with any 3 of the bottom 4 vying for the doomed drop into Division 2 and a loss of much needed income to build their teams should they go down.

The results of this month’s Player of the Month vote is as follows:

Terry Cooke   17 votes

Signed a year's contract at the start of the season, after a trial at the Mariners and when he’s in the right frame of mind can be a good outlet on the wing for Grimsby Town. His career started at Man Utd where in the youth setup he played with the likes of Beckham, Butt, and Giggs plus the Neville brothers

Danny Coyne   2 votes

Played for Tranmere Rovers for a few seasons and when he was given a free transfer by John Aldridge, was snapped up for the Mariners by Alan Buckley and hasn't looked back since. Has just regained his squad place back for Wales after being in the wilderness, and has been Town's backbone since his arrival between the sticks

Paul Groves   21 votes

Signed by Alan Buckley from Blackpool, Groves has become a Grimsby Town legend with the fans, after captaining the side now has the unenviable task of managing Town while having no money to spend to bolster the squad. Having to rely on the newly altered loan system to fill the small squad Town has largely inherited.

Tony Gallimore   2 votes

Behind Livvo and Macca, Galli has been with the Mariners for a number of seasons since being bought by Brian Laws from Carlisle Utd. His other clubs were Crewe Alex and his hometown club of Stoke City. While at Crewe he played under the League's longest serving manager Dario Gradi

Alan Pouton   15 votes

Alan always wears his heart on his sleeve and will be serving a long ban due to the bad disciplinary record he has notched up this season and will consequently miss the relegation run-in that Town are facing at the time of this article being written. Yet another Buckley bargain from York City

The player you've voted for this month is Georges Santos.

Georges Santos   180 votes

Since coming to Grimsby Town he has got a cult status with the Town fans for the way he plays and wears his heart on his sleeve. Sometimes the red mist descends and this will always hamper him in the way he plays because he will be prejudged for his previous misdemeanours. Santos has played for Tranmere Rovers and then went on to play for Sheffield Utd, where he will be best remembered for his two minute sending off against West Brom last season in the infamous "Battle of Bramall Lane".
