Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Oxford Preview

AFTER over a week’s break, it’s back to business in the league with the visit of Oxford to Blundell Park, a side that were relegated along with the Mariners from Division Two last season.

Oxford have had a pretty traumatic season so far - with three different managers at the Kassam Stadium. Ex-Portsmouth gaffer Graham Rix started in charge, but was moved upstairs, for youth coach Darren Patterson to take temporary charge. A big shock came last week, however, when former Argentinian international Ramon Diaz was installed as their new boss. Diaz won five titles with River Plate and certainly looks an impressive appointment.

Oxford

Oxford are just below Town in the table, but were expected to challenge at the top of the table with the likes of Tommy Mooney (top) and former £3 million striker Lee Bradbury on the books for the U’s. Mooney has netted 6 times for Oxford this season, but might have been expecting more after banging in 19 for Swindon last term, who were a league above the U’s. Also in the Oxford squad is ex Coventry defender Barry Quinn, whilst Leo Roget is a defender with lower league experience with Brentford, Southend, Rushden, Stockport and Reading. One man to watch though is 18 year old Craig Davies who made his first start for the team last weekend against Cambridge, and scored.

Team News

Town

  • Russell Slade has to decide whether to make changes in attack with Ashley Sestanovich, Michael Reddy and Darren Mansaram all knocking on the door for a place in the starting eleven. However, Colin Cramb will probably get the nod to partner Andy Parkinson.

  • Justin Whittle has a slight back strain, but should be fit to play, while Simon Ramsden had another reserve outing so could make the bench.

    Oxford

  • Leo Roget will continue in defence whilst Jon Ashton completes his suspension.

  • 'Keeper Chris Tardiff is fit again, but Ramon Diaz must decide whether to recall him in place of youngster Bradie Clarke.

  • Craig Davies is likely to continue in attack, keeping the likes of Mark Rawle and Danny Morgan out of the side.
