Darren Barnard

Attacking left back signed from Barnsley in the summer of 2002, Darren Barnard was the rare embodiment of a current international at Blundell Park, and was hailed as a big signing for the Mariners. After relegation in his final season with the Tykes the Welshman was mainly used in midfield in his first year at Town.

After Tony Gallimore's release Barnard took over the number 3 shirt and despite starting 03/04 well with a free kick v Wycombe he tailed off and struggled for consistency in what was to rapidly become a very poor side heading for a second consecutive drop.

After relegation was confirmed, Barnard made it clear he wanted to leave, stating that '3rd division football wouldn't be good for him'.

He was right. He signed for Aldershot on the eve of 04/05 and has recently signed a new deal tying him to the Hampshire club for another year.

Unfortunately for Darren Barnard his two years at Blundell Park just happened to be the worst two in almost a generation.
