Derby 0 Grimsby Town 1 - Report

By: Rob Salt
Date: 25/08/2005

AS we walked up to the ground a seagull uses my mate for a toilet. Was this going to be a lucky sign for tonight's match? Once in the ground we were all very impressed with the set up and wished that somebody would come along and build us a stadium like this, but then that's a different story.

Town lined up with a 4-4-2 formation with Ramsden moving across to left back, there was also starts for Cohen on right wing, JP in midfield and Gary Jones up front. Town started by defending the goal where there was approx 200 town fans gathered and were in good voice.

It wasn't long before we could see what an improvement it was by playing with wingers. Earlier on a half chance fell to Reddy but as he got in the box this run was blocked for a corner. As the game went on town were handling the Derby attacks, Rob Jones being very impressive wining everything in the air as well as the floor.

Then came the town goal. After some good forward play Gary Jones controlled the ball with his chest, turned and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle, an excellent goal and his first for the club. That seemed to wake Derby up a bit and shortly afterwards their first attack, after we scored, a cross come shot went across the face of the town goal with no Derby players able to get a touch.

Town were playing very well, they were playing football to feet, using midfield, defending well and the two forwards were not having to chase the balls into the corners.

Town fully deserved their halftime lead.

In the second half town replaced Rob Jones with Glen Downey, Jones must have been injured as he had an excellent first half and was man of the half. Downey, (the man I thought did not exist) played at left back with Simon Ramsden moving to centre back.

The second half Town had to withstand some early pressure from Derby as we would have expected, Mildenhall collected a couple of corners and crosses without too much trouble. After absorbing that town had two great chances to grab another goal, firstly Reddy was through and opted to shoot when a pass to Parky unmarked may have been a better option.

Then Bolland got through and hit his attempt straight at the keeper, Bolland though seemed to think he was offside and that must have affected him.

With the town fans chanting to Derby "Championship you're having a laugh" they could sense a victory and in the last few minutes town replaced Cohen with Barwick and had to withstand some more pressure.

Mildenhall made his first save of the game late on by diving to his left, but town held on, they played well and fully deserved to win.

Man of match I can't pick as they all played well, Rob Jones for his first half display but also Bolland was impressive too, he was from box to box from start to finish.

After Saturday's poor performance this is just the performance we wanted to see.
