Beat the Bookies: Week 10
By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/10/2005
LAST week's bet came to nothing when the Tigers failed to beat Norwich at Carrow Road. Hull did race into a 1-0 lead in the first minute. Unfortunately there were another 89 to go and they lost 2-1 in the end!

With the sterile world of the Premiership absent from our screens again this week, it's time for England to do their utmost to make qualification from an easy group as hard as possible. For those fancying an upset bet365.com are offering 12/1 on Austria beating England, or 3/1 for England failing to win. England at 2/9 are not worth backing unless you have a lot of money to spare, and/or are supremely confident.
In other international's Jean-Paul Kalala's DR Congo are 7/2 to win at South Africa with bet365.com, good value when you consider Congo must win and South Africa have no chance of qualifying.
The Mariners of course square up to Wycombe in the big League Two clash on Friday night. bet365.com give Grimsby the edge at 5/4, with Wanderers rated 9/5 and the draw 9/4. Probably the biggest factor from Grimsby's point of view is how many first choice players are missing. Kalala is definitely out, and Town may miss the Congolese in the centre of the park, as they probably did last week at Shrewsbury.
The odds of Rob Jones to score the first goal are steadily reducing. The big defender started the season at 40/1 and is now rated 20/1 with bet365.com to find the net.
Goals are likely to be flowing at Blundell Park judging by Wycombe's recent record. The Chairboys have scored 16 goals in their last 6 games, and 13 in the last 4. Town, on the other hand, have the meanest defence in the division, having conceded just 8 goals all season.
That said Town have regularly found the net in recent home games, winning their last two home league matches 3-0 and 4-0.
The recommended bet this week therefore is to bet on the total number of goals in the game (from either side). IGIndex have given the game a spread of 2.6-2.8 for total goals. I will be buying at 2.8 at £5 per goal. Three or more goals will return a profit; less than three goals will make a loss.
RECOMMENDED BET OF THE WEEK: Buy total goals in Grimsby v Wycombe |
