Beat the Bookies: Week 10

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/09/2006

WITH a busy midweek programme, the weekday action promises this week to offer superior betting opportunities to the weekend, so Beat the Bookies comes early this week, hot on the heels of Lincoln's win over Wycombe on Saturday.

Town have two tough games coming up against Hartlepool at home on Tuesday and Darlo away just three days later. bet365.com were offering Grimsby at odds on to win, and Hartlepool at 13/5 on Sunday. However, the money (including mine) has clearly gone on Hartlepool as Town are now evens and Pool have been backed in to 2/1. It's hard to imagine the odds of Town winning are just Evens after Saturday's dreadful display on top of a string of mainly unconvincing performances, so even at 2/1 Pool are worth backing (I managed to back Hartlepool on Sunday when they were still 13/5).

Alternatively if you must back Town then bet365.com are offering 10/3 for a Grimsby win at Darlington, whose form has dipped a little of late after a fine start. If Town do beat Hartlepool, then you can be sure that the odds of a second straight win at the Reynolds Arena will drop, so why not back the Mariners now?

In the Champions League it's the usual annual story of the English clubs being proved not good enough, yet the market generally overstates the odds of our Premiership teams year after year. This week it's just a question of pick the upset. They are FC Porto at Arsenal 15/2, Benfica at home to Man Utd 5/2, Levski Sofia at home to Chelsea 12/1, Liverpool at home to Galatasaray 9/1. Each and every one of these "upsets" is worth backing, but if I had to pick one it would be Benfica to repeat last year's victory over the Red Devils in the Estádio da Luz.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Hartlepool to beat Grimsby (2/1 with bet365.com).
  • 2. Benfica to beat Man Utd (5/2 with bet365.com).
