FA Slap Town's Wrists

THE Mariners have had their appeal to rescind Nick Fenton's red card at Stockport turned down by the FA. However, the governing body have slapped a further one match ban on the centre back for what they described as a "frivolous" appeal.

The FA regarded Grimsby's appeal over Fenton as a cynical ploy to buy time before the transfer window opened in January. The delay meant Fenton was able to play on New Year's Day against Rochdale. However, the decision by the club has doubly backfired because Town lost 4-0 to Dale, and now Fenton will miss both the Chester and Walsall games.

Fenton was sent off for a handball against Stockport on Saturday (for which the referee also awarded a penalty), in a decision which many supporters considering to be extremely harsh.

With the Mariners having just two recognised centre backs at the club, Fenton's suspension and Justin Whittle's injury on Monday have further highlighted the desperate shortage of central defenders in Town's squad, something which has contributed to 3 heavy defeats over the festive period. Alan Buckley will be desperate to sign a replacement ASAP.
