Alan Pouton | 1999/00-2003/04 | 112 (23) | 12 goals |
A huge fans favourite at Blundell Park is powerhouse midfielder Alan Pouton. Pouts who is known for his passion and his fire, in more ways than one is a true Mariners legend.
Pouton was booked on as a pro at Oxford United in the 1995/1996 season. The Newcastle-born midfielder never made an appearance for Oxford and a year later was released. Pouton moved back up north and joined York City.
Pouts went straight into the York team and enjoyed playing for The Minsterman, asserting himself as a strong midfield engine room. He established himself well and earned a reputation in the lower leagues.
In August 1999, he got his chance to prove himself in the higher divisions when he transferred to Grimsby Town for £150,000. Pouts came to Grimsby with a lot of potential, and we saw it all over the course of his 5 year stay at Blundell Park.
Pouton along with Michael Boulding were the first two players in over 5 years both to score a hatrick in the same game in a 6-2 demolition of Wimbledon. His step-overs became famous at Grimsby and he won the hearts of the fans.
With injury a problem as well for Pouton he made the most of his time for Grimsby. Pouton was crocked out of action in the last few months of the 2002/2003 season for Town and did not return until the following season.
Pouts returned to action right at the end of the Groves era. With the board worried about the club's financial status Pouton was sold against his will, even after stating he would take a massive pay cut just to play for the club. Pouton was sold to Gillingham for a tiny fee of £30,000 - a few days later top scorer Michael Boulding also left the club.
Pouton's Gillingham career never took off. When he wasn't injured he was on loan at Hartlepool United. He however did earn the respect of the Gills faithful, but he never lived up to his expectations, after his Grimsby exploits.
Pouton was rumoured to be on his way back to Town, at both the start of the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 seasons, but nothing ever came of it. Alan sadly retired in early 2007 following an ongoing injury problem.
