Beat the Bookies: Week 9

By: Rob Sedgwick

LAST week we said: "Go down the bookies, do not pass the pub, and put as much money as you can afford to lose on a Barnet victory. You will not regret it." Did you follow our advice? If not you missed a golden chance to make some money.

Grimsby face Rochdale on Friday night, who have been somewhat of a bogey side of the Mariners. If Town play 4-4-2 and having been strengthened by the signing of Logan I would expect them to go on and win the game. However at the time of writing I wouldn't trust Buckley not to mess about with 4-5-1 again and therefore am not tempted for the 5/4 on offer for a home win.

Elsewhere in League Two Bury are starting to rise up the league after a poor start and face Notts County away on Saturday. County have had a poor start to the season by their standards and are beatable at home. Expect the Shakers to come away with three points.

Town have a string of very tough fixtures coming up after the Rochdale game. The Mariners face Wycombe, Bradford, Rotherham and MK Dons prior to the FA Cup 1s Round game on 10th November, with only the Bradford game being at home. Unfortunately on paper Grimsby are likely to struggle over the next few weeks and the odds on them getting relegated are likely to reduce. Therefore it's a good time to bet on them to get relegated now, in the hope that later on you can bet on Town to stay up and make a profit whatever the outcome. Grimsby are 9/1 to get relegated with Corals, good value when most bookies are offering less than 6/1.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Bury to beat Notts County (5/2, bet365).
  • 2. Grimsby to be relegated (9/1, Corals).

Previous Bets (1 or 2 bets, around £10 per week each of Rob's own money)
