Plymouth Argyle Facts

Last Season
8th in Division 2, an excellent finish in their first season back in division two. However, lack of goals meant they fell just short of a play-off spot.

Manager
Paul Sturrock, led Argyle to the third division championship in 2001/02 and has instilled a style of football to the team that makes them a difficult team to beat in any division.

Top Players
Marino Keith top scorer last season with 12 goals, and is expected to reach that 20 goal mark this season.

David Frio, French midfield player who has been a revelation for Argyle. Was inspirational in their promotion season and looks equally impressive in the second division.

Micky Evans (left), experienced forward who started off with Plymouth in the mid 1990s, but left for Southampton in a £800,000 transfer. Also played for WBA before rejoining the Devonshire side last season.

Odds To Win
20/1, one of the more fancied sides in the division

Team News

  • Already the Mariners have quite a few players injured. Alan Pouton has already been ruled out for three months, whilst Stacy Coldicott is out until September.

  • Captain John McDermott will also miss the seasons opener through a leg injury. Therefore, new signing Jason Crowe could be plunged straight into the action at right back. Alternatively, Marcel Cas could deputise for McDermott, as Crowe would probably only last 70-80 minutes because his lack of pre-season games.

  • With McDermott and Pouton injured, Town are without their Captain and Vice-Captain. Stuart Campbell has recently worn the armband in the last few pre-season games, but Groves refuses to confirm who he will pick. The Fishy thinks that should Groves decide against handing Campbell the captaincy, then goalkeeper Aidan Davison could well be in line for the call.

  • Up front, much depends on whether Laurens Ten Heuvel signs in time for the kick off. If, as expected, he does, then he will partner Michael Boulding up front. If Town fail to secure his contract then Jonny Rowan will probably start with "Quick Mick".
  • Argyle have full back Paul Connoly suspended, so David Worrell will play instead of him at full back.

  • Manager Paul Sturrock has to decide which of his five main midfielders he will leave out, after all have impressed during the summer. Four places are up for grabs, with young Steven Adams expected to be the one left out.

  • In attack, Sturrock must decide between partnering Marino Keith with Micky Evans, Ian Stonebridge or Nathan Lowndes.

  • Elsewhere, Plymouth have no major injury worries.

    Last Time Out

Town meet Plymouth for the first time since the famous 1997/98 promotion season when they won 1-0 at Blundell Park in March when a Paul Groves goal earned all three points for Town. The last time Town visited Home Park was in August 1997 when a 2-2 draw meant a share of the spoils with Kevin Donovan (his first ever goal for Town) and Lee Nogan grabbing the Mariners goals. Grimsby’s win against Plymouth in March was Town’s last win at Blundell Park for more than a month - their next success at Blundell Park was to be against Fulham in the play-off semi final.

Town Team: Davison, McDermott, Gallimore, Handyside, Lever, Donovan, Smith, Burnett, Groves, Lester, Nogan.
    Subs: Livingstone, Black, Clare

    Attendance: 4661

Plymouth Head-to-Head (51st on The Opposition Ladder).
