Trophy Woes

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/12/2021

GRIMSBY were comprehensively beaten by Stockport County 4-0 in the FA Trophy. Although it's not a high profile competition and Grimsby were down to the bare bones due to players being unavailable (largely Covid), the manner of the defeat was worrying.

Town's lack of forwards was compounded by Lenell John-Lewis being sent off for use of the elbow in the second half when the score was 4-0. That means John-Lewis, playing in a game that did not matter, will be suspended for league games that do matter.

Town's makeshift side almost conceded early on, but Alex Hunt gifted Collar a goal when he was dispossessed. Crocombe kept Town in the game with a good save, but it was soon 0-2 with Croasdale adding the second.

The second half started disastrously when Lenell John-Lewis was sent off for an elbow on Ash Palmer

With the result beyond doubt Stockport added two more through Palmer and Collar.

The only positive from the game, apart from the FA Trophy no longer affording any sort of distraction, was that John McAteee is one game closer to his three-match suspension ending.

Paul Hurst has spent the whole of the first half of the season with a woefully inadequate forward line and he desperately needs to make some good signings in January if he is to keep his job.
