Ivano To Play!

News From 27th June 2000

Ivano

With ex-Mariner Ivano Bonetti's Dundee side arriving at Blundell Park on Friday, July 21st to play Town in a special pre-season friendly, the question every Town fan wants to know is: will he play?.

The answer is appears to be yes! In an interview with the official Dundee web site, Ivano has indicated that he intends to consider playing for the Scottish side.

Ivano says in the interview:

"When I said I had to check the situation if I play or not it was because I had to see all my management and the rest of the management if it was properly professional. And then what I see is I have good management and they allow me to. Because normally it is difficult to play and be manager, but if you have good collaboration you can do that I think. And then I decide to play."

Bonetti also said jokingly when the match was arranged that he would play a half for each side. Although that is unlikely to happen the site of Bonetti with the ball at his feet is bound to bring back happy memories to the Grimsby faithful.

During his brief stay in Cleethorpes Grimsby rose to second in the first division, and a historic promotion to the Premiership looked an outside chance. Sadly it all went horribly wrong at Luton when Bonetti and then-manager Brian Laws had an infamous dressing room bust-up that ultimately led to both men leaving the club, court cases and relegation for the Mariners.
