Zhang Joins Legion

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 26/11/2000

Chinese national defender, Zhang Enhua, is set to arrive at Blundell Park on Monday for a trial with the Mariners. Town boss Lawrence first expressed his interest in the Chinaman on a local radio phone in, after news Grimsby were tracking the player was revealed in error on the club's official site.

A mixture of the player's demands, political issues and the return to form after injury of Peter Handyside meant that the deal initially fell through.

However, with the news that Handyside may be out until the new year with a stress fracture, Lawrence has obviously decided to retry to bring Enhua to Cleethorpes.

If the trial is successful it is unlikely that Enhua's registration will come through in time for Saturdays match against Crystal Palace, where he would have played aginst his fellow countryman, Fan Zhiyi.

Zhang Enhua Factfile

  • Age: 27
  • Height: 6 foot
  • Weight: 12 stone 7 pounds
  • Current team: Dalian Shide
  • International Honours: Chinese national captain (90 appearances, 10 goals)
  • Extras: Had a trial for Southampton in 1998
