Burnett: We Can Build

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 27/12/2000

After earning his side a valuable point against Stockport on Tuesday, Grimsby midfielder Wayne Burnett believes that the Mariners are capable of building on their recent form and finishing in the top half of the table.

Town face an important two matches over the next five days, as they take on fellow strugglers Portsmouth and Sheffield Wednesday. Although they are currently languishing seventh from bottom of the First Division, Burnett is confident that the Mariners will be able to build on their current four-match unbeaten run: "I think the lads are very optimistic about it. Nothing's definite until mathematically certain and we know it's going to be difficult," said the 29-year old. Burnett, who scored only his third league goal since joining the Mariners in 1998, was also realistic about the disappointing nature of Grimsby's performance against the Hatters: "I didn't think we played particularly well and if we're being honest, we were fortunate to come out of this game with a draw. "But the good thing that we can take is that we're playing poorly and still getting results. All we have to do is play better and improve and take it from there." The former Plymouth and Huddersfield man then went on to speak of the current atmosphere in the Town dressing-room as he continued: "I think we are more than capable, and I am very confident that we'll make the top half of the table. If we put a decent run together and work as hard as we have been, we can finish in the top half. "The lads have shown great desire over the last four or five games when we've played reasonably well. When we play not so good, we keep getting points. I'd rather play not as well and keep getting points." Burnett, who is currently on a month-to-month contract with the club after being plagued by injuries, also spoke at his delight in being involved in first-team action once again: "I'm not saying the injury was a good thing, but I'm so much more appreciative of playing, and I don't take things for granted. "If somebody had said to me six months ago I was going to play three games in a week, even two, I would have laughed at them. But I have done."
