The Man Utd Debate

David Peasgood this week finds Fred and Bert are discussing the most loved (and simultaneously most hated) team in the known universe.

Hear their views and YOU decide in our latest 'fishy' poll.

Bert & Fred

The Man Utd Debate

FRED:
I like Man United. They are good for British football's image.

BERT:
You must be daft. I love to see them lose.

FRED:
What! Even in Euro competitions to foreigners.

BERT:
Yeah. It isn't the team especially I dislike it's the smug self satisfied supporters that have never been to Manchester, let alone Old Trafford, but they jump on the bandwagon of success instead of supporting their home team.

FRED:
Hmm Lots of points there. First there are some genuine and loyal Man utd. fans that DO watch the team and even travel every week to see them. Then there are fans paying cash to watch the MUFC pay per view satellite channel. They are putting cash in the club. As for jumping on bandwagons, we've all done that as kids. I remember half our old class supported Bolton and the other half Arsenal. They were the teams of the day. No-one was gonna admit to supporting Scunny or Hull. They'd have been laughed out of school.

BERT:
It doesn't help clubs like town though does it, when parents spend forty quid on a Man Utd shirt for little Jimmy's Xmas, instead of putting the cash into GTFC.

FRED:
True. Then again GTFC have sold a hell of a lot of shirts in recent years as their credibility nationwide has improved. Don't get too greedy.

BERT:
I just believe charity begins at home that's all.

FRED:
Yeah but there's more to life than football. I bought a Lacoste T-shirt last week for forty quid. You didn't complain I could have bought a GTFC one for the same did you. And anyway I'd have looked daft down at the hospital coffee morning stood in a GTFC shirt.

BERT:
You just wanna show off to that old Mrs Grommett who serves the scones. You want to impress her.

FRED:
Maybe I do. And maybe Man utd fans want to impress too with their support, shirts and little pennants hung up in cars. There's nowt wrong with supporting your home club and that's where most Grimsby folk's hearts are, but why not show off once in a while and enjoy Man Utd or Arsenals next European victory. We are all British after all.
