Willems to Sign?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 26/01/2001

Dutch midfielder Menno Willems may join Grimsby Town on a permanent deal, according to manager Lennie Lawrence, who stated that the personal terms he is asking for are not unreasonable and that negotiations with Willems and his agent are continuing.

However, it is not all good news for manager Lennie Lawrence as he continues his search for a loan striker.

Cyril French striker Cyril Eboki-Poh (pictured), who was reported to be coming to Grimsby to play in a reserves game will not now be arriving at Blundell Park for a trial. Lennie Lawrence had insisted that if Eboki-Poh came it would have to be on a three month loan term in accordance with EUFA rules. It is understood that Eboki-Poh is now at Kilmarnock.

A trial for Leeds United striker Lee Matthews may not go ahead as it has now turned out that he is not available on a free transfer as first thought.

Cheltenham Town however have proposed an extension of Daryl Clare's loan period at Whaddon Road. Lennie Lawrence said " If we can get someone in ourselves, then we will probably agree to extend the loan. At the end of the day there is no point in recalling him unless we're going to play him."

Cheltenham manager Steve Cotterill does not have a great deal of money in the player pool to delve into the transfer market but Chairman Paul Baker has indicated that the club could sign Clare from Grimsby if the Robins can find the necessary funds. Yesterday, Baker said they would look at Clare's signing as an investment, and another approach to the Mariners could eventuate in the near future.
