Lennie's Premier Target!!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 03/02/2001

Grimsby Town Manager Lennie Lawrence has been looking to secure a striker to replace David Nielsen who left Blundell Park after completing his loan spell. This week manager Lawrence stated that he had a premier league player in his sights.

The Grimsby Telegraph have now revealed that the player he is targeting is 21 year old Leicester City striker Trevor Benjamin.

Trevor Benjamin Lawrence will see Benjamin (left, playing for Leicester against Newcastle), who cost the Foxes £1.5m this summer from Cambridge, in action on Monday night when Leicester Reserves take on Coventry.

If Peter Taylor agrees it is hoped that Benjamin will be in the side for next week's Gillingham game. As Lennie Lawrence and Taylor are good friends and Benjamin is now down to third choice striker at Leicester, Lawrence is hoping that he will allow the loan. Grimsby already have Stuart Campbell on loan from Leicester.

Benjamin was also top of Lawrence's list earlier on in the season before he signed David Nielsen but at that time he was wanted by Leicester and they refused to part with him.

If Lennie Lawrence succeeds in his loan bid, it could be a significant help in the Mariners current battle to survive in the first division.
