The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Reserves Bore Draw

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 21/03/2001

A COLD, windy afternoon was the scene for a poor 1-1 draw involving Grimsby and Wigan's reserves. Town fielded the usual mix of fringe players and trialists. In the Wigan line up were former Portsmouth star, Alan McLoughlin and ex-Leeds starlet Kevin Sharp.

Welsh cap Simon Howarth also featured for the Latics . Town lined up as follows

Croudson
McSteaBloomerHowardButterfield

ThompsonRowan

As a whole the game was poor and I can't honestly remember that much to report on.

Wigan scored their goal halfway through the first half when Roberto Martinez was played through, he then played the ball across to the unmarked Gino Padula who shot into the top corner from 10 yards.

For the remainder of the 1st half Wigan dominated and Town were lucky not to concede another.

After the break Rowan was replaced by Andy Smith and Adam Buckley was pushed further into the strikers role.

Danny Thomas and Tom Upsher replaced Steve Torpey (not the Scunny striker) and Antony McStea as the end of the game approached.

In the 2nd half Town had the most of the ball but didn't make the most of it until the very last minute when Chris Thompson was played through by Kingsley Black and coolly lobbed Lee Ellis in the Wigan goal.

Ratings

  • Croudson 7 - Made some nice saves
  • McStea 6.5 - Looked comfortable
  • Butterfield 8 - Cut out all danger and attacked well
  • Bloomer 6 - Looked uneasy all game, not the same player he was 2 months ago
  • Howard 6 - Paul Raven but taller
  • Buckley 7 - Constant threat
  • Torpey 7 - Very tricky player, bit lightweight
  • Rose 8 - Man U trialist who plays with the same style as Alan Pouton
  • Black 7 - Always buzzing around looking for the ball
  • Thompson 7 - caused problems and took his goal very well
  • Rowan 6 - ineffective, seemed to take a knock early on
  • Smith 7 - improving every game.

Alan Buckley was, once again at the game talking with Paul Groves.

A Sheffield Wednesday scout was said to be at the game watching Danny Butterfield, and on today's performance, he can not have been disapointed.
