Danish Clash in Doubt

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/06/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN's pre-season clash with David Nielsen's old team FC Copenhagen looks likely to be cancelled due to the Danish side's involvement in the preliminary round of the Champions League. The trip to Denmark had been pencilled in for July 25th, on the back of the club's summer tour of Sweden.

With one of the two legs of the European competition falling in the same week at the friendly against Grimsby, the Danes have been given little choice but to cancel the fixture, leaving Town in the position of finding alternative opposition in Scandinavia to fill the slot in their pre-season itinerary.

An outside possibility of FC Copenhagen fielding a team of fringe players against the Mariners remains, depending exactly when the Dane's fixture to gain entry into the final stages of the lucrative competition is due to take place.

A resigned Town Lennie Lawrence commented on the news: "They're going to be in the Champions League and we knew there was that possibility when we booked it. It means we have got to find someone else to play.

"There will still be a game and it depends if they play on the Tuesday. If they do then we play a squad team but, if it's Wednesday, then we'll have to find someone else" said Lawrence.

Town's first summer tour outside the British Isles for many years is part of a packed pre-season programme, being followed by domestic friendlies against St Mirren (home, July 28th), Scunthorpe United (Aug 1st, away) and Huddersfield Town (Aug 3rd, home).
