Cod Head of the Week: Bill Coxon

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/09/2001

This site is written by fans for fans and each week we interview a prominent "Cod Head" as part our commitment to fans of Grimsby Town FC. We regularly need new cod heads, so would appreciate contributions from lifelong supporters of the Mariners. This week's Cod Head is Bill Coxon.

Bill Coxon

Fishy:
Tell us a bit about yourself?

Bill:
I was born in Grimsby in 1931 and went to Weelsby and Harold Street schools. My Grandad founded Coxon’s taxis in the station yard. My wife Eileen (another Grimbarian) and I emigrated to Canada in 1957.

Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?

Bill:
My first game was in 1937 and we always stood in a little concrete section next to the main stand. I have no idea who we played.

Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?

Bill:
The best player I have seen in a Town shirt is Billy Wardle with Ernie Forrest a close second.

Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?

Bill:
One game I would like to see again is Town v Man. City. Just to see Frank Swift again,

Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?

Bill:
My favorite ground is Highbury and by far the worst was the Old Show Ground in Scunthorpe.

Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?

Bill:
Town’s best season has to be 1998 with two trips to Wembley.
The worst is 54-55 season.

Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?

Bill:
Most eventful day was the first trip to Wembley, I will never forget it.

Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?

Bill:
Greatest manager has to be Alan Buckley for what he did for the club in 1998. Bill Shankley would rank up there.

Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?

Bill:
Only get to see them play when over on vacation.

Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?

Bill:
