Lawrence Says He Does Not Want To Create A Record

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 26/10/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE is trying to avoid creating a record tonight against Birmingham with a win for Brum making it seven losses in a row thereby making it the longest losing sequence since 1909.

"I've got one or two records since I've been here, but we have to do everything we can to make sure we don't set that record. We won't be here in another 92 years," said Lawrence to the Grimsby Telegraph.

"We had the best end-of-season considering the opposition last year and there's not many managers who have won a manager of the month in the first division at the club. Liverpool was fantastic - a one-off and one of the greatest nights this club's ever had. "You have to take the rough with the smooth, but (the record) that's the last thing we'd want."

"I've never had a spell like it. Not such a bad run in this division."

Lawrence admits that being too defensive would only invite another defeat. "I still want to give us a chance of winning. If we just sit back we'll lose because in the recent past we haven't shown that we are able to cope with sustained pressure. I have to get the balance right."

"It's disappointing for the drop to be this savage and I have to take the responsibility. If you're a manager and you're losing games then obviously you're not happy. What I'm trying to do is get the pressure off the players and onto me. That has to happen or results will never change.

"The crowd has not been bad to us although we haven't served up anything in the last three home games. They're quiet, but at least they're not hostile."

Town: Coyne, Neilson, Groves, Broomes, Beharall, Gallimore, Pouton, Coldicott, Willems, Boulding Butterfield, Campbell, Allen, Jevons, Croudson, Rowan, Chapman, Campbell.
