Paul Groves On His First Defeat!!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/01/2002

PAUL GROVES said that the Mariners could not offer any excuses for being dumped out of the FA cup by York City last night. Groves was not happy about suffering his first defeat since he became manager, especially by a third division club.

The Grimsby Telegraph reported Groves's comments on the game during the post match conference. "It was a very disappointing result and performance. That is the worst we have played and we know it was not good enough. We are not going to offer any excuses up for that, credit to York on the night they were better than us, and that is disappointing."

"It was like a different side compared to Saturday, especially at the start. In the second half we tried to change it round a little, and that gave us a little bit of impetus, but not enough to get back in it. Danny kept us in the game and made some excellent saves, and he is the only one who came out of it with any credit. The goal has come off someone then cannoned off Alan and gone into the back of the net, but if it wasn't for Danny Coyne we could have lost the game quite comfortably."

"In some of the games we have been able to limit first division teams to a lot fewer chances than that, we were poor at both ends and there are no excuses."

"We have played poorly and we are not under any illusions. We have got an important league game coming up and we need to concentrate on that. A performance like that will dent players' confidence, but that is part and parcel of our job to try and get them up and make sure they are ready to play the next game."
