Groves Changes His Mind On Coyne's Release

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 06/02/2002

GRIMSBY Town boss Paul Groves today decided not to stop Danny Coyne from joining up with the Wales squad for the friendly with Argentina next week. In what would have been a major blow to Coyne, Groves had planned not to let him go in case he got injured.

But after 3 way talks with Coyne and Mark Hughes, Groves has agreed to let Danny go after Sunday's televised game at Watford.

Town boss Groves was worried if Coyne got injured as has only Stevie Croudson in reserve.

"We'd like to see him get his chance, but if he gets injured are Wales going to loan us a keeper?" Grove told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"We have to protect our own interests and look after the player. It's crucial stage of the season for us and I have to consider every aspect for this football club. With Stevie carrying an injury there is a concern, but in no way, shape or form, do we want to prevent him from going."

Groves praised Danny on his call up saying: "I think it's down to his hard work and consistency over the last 18 months. This is the reward that he gets and the call-up is fully deserved. The level of his performances have been excellent and the recognition is fully deserved."
