Who will win League 2?

Danish Giants to Buy British

By: Jostein Jensen
Date: 08/02/2002

FC COPENHAGEN are interested in buying themselves into an English club writes Tipsbladet, after the Danish giants earlier had an opportunity to purchase Huddersfield. Although they eventually declined their interest in buying the Yorkshire club, their desire to make an acquisition is undiminished.

"We are looking for an English 1st division club and are ready to buy if the budget and plans fit the picture," FCC Director Flemming Østergaard told Tipsbladet.

The club wants to buy 51 percent of the shares to be able to control the club.

FC Copenhagen had at one time been very close to Grimsby Town (below). The Mariners had David Nielsen on loan last season from the Danish giants, and former manager Lennie Lawrence was very interested in getting more players in on loan whilst his close friend Roy Hodgson was still manager of the Scandinavian outfit.

If the Danes were to add Grimsby to their shopping list, the Mariners would prove to be one of the cheapest clubs in the First Division to buy into. With Town's new stadium plans on the verge of finally going ahead, Grimsby could fit Flemming Østergaard's bill at an attractive price, and with Dudley Ramsden controlling 51% of the GTFC shares his first objective to buy a controlling interest could be met if a price was agreed with the Town director.

The Danish Director underlines that there is nothing concrete going on at the moment, but also admits that a French club had been in the picture at one time. The Parken club have also been linked with buying Norwegian 1 Division side Ham/Kam (through former FCC player Ståle Solbakken) and earlier had a near connection with a South African club, where they found their star striker Sibusiso Zuma. Now however, their sights are set of acquiring control of a English First Division club: the question is would Grimsby fit the bill?
