Ablett Released After Trial

GRIMSBY TOWN have decided not to offer terms to former Liverpool defender Gary Ablett. The 36-year-old took part in a trial yesterday against Boston United behind closed doors at Brigg Town, and has now left the area.

32-year-old Luton defender Richard Dryden is also understood to have taken part in the trial match against the Conference side which Town lost 1-2, but no announcement has yet been made by the club as to their intentions for the former Birmingham and Southampton player.

Ablett, who has recently been playing in America and is a free agent, started his career at Liverpool where he played over a hundred games for the Reds. He then moved to neighbours Everton and went on to play for Birmingham City, Derby, Hull, Sheffield United, Wycombe and Blackpool before heading off to the States.

As was revealed yesterday, Grimsby's hands are tied by the FA's bizarre regulations surrounding loan players, and therefore can only look at bringing in permanent employees for the next few weeks. The Mariners currently have on paper two short-term loanees at the club, although one of them (Martin Pringle) is clearly unable to play for Town as he has broken his leg!
